Westlife's Uptown Girl has debuted at the top of the UK singles chart, selling 298348 copies.

The song, a cover of Billy Joel's eighties classic, is this year's official Comic Relief single, with all the profits going to the Appeal.

The song continues the Irish group's amazing tally of Number 1 hits, now standing at eight.

Speaking on Radio 1, group member Bryan said Westlife were "thrilled" and thanked the public for buying the record for such a good cause.

It's not the first time a Comic Relief track has reached the chart summit. Cliff Richard & The Young Ones, Hale & Pace, Cher, Chrissie Hynde & Neneh Cherry, the Spice Girls and Boyzone have also done it for Comic Relief.

This year's song was the idea of Comic Relief mainbrain and co-founder, Richard Curtis.
