Six volunteer celebrities bade au revoir to the outside world tonight and prepared to live for up to a week under the constant gaze of 24 television cameras in the Big Brother house.

On the first night Chris Eubank and Anthea Turner face being the first to be evicted.

Vanessa Feltz, the favourite to win, was taking the event not a little seriously: "The situation is so painful and difficult already."

After their first meal together of basic soup and cheese, the group must adjust to life without their creature comforts.

Big Brother's psychologist said the female members of the group will express their unease more than the men, who are expected to conceal their discomfort.
