Tuesday, 18 February 2003, 5.23 PM Now in its 18th year, Comic Relief was launched by the comedy community in 1985, to combat the famine in Africa and the needs of the disadvantaged in the UK. Although it supports projects all year round, the UK-wide fundraiser relaunches every two years, culminating on Red Nose Day, with a night of frolic, nay insanity, and fantastic TV treats on BBC ONE. This year's Red Nose Day is Friday March 14th. The Comic Relief promise is that for every pound raised, a pound goes directly to work helping people. Two-thirds of the money raised is spent in Africa and the remaining third on projects in the UK. The partnership of charity and commerce also leads to a whole bunch of nifty merchandise, including the famous Red Nose. Also available are Harry Potter books, Dubble fairtrade chocolate, the Comic Relief single and lots more. Red Nose Day 2003's theme is The Big Hair Do, encouraging you to use your imagination and your hair - be it anywhere - to raise money. Alternatively, you could just style this year's ready-quiffed Red Nose. The name of the game is getting the public involved in innovative and fun cash-making events. So far through the power of the Nose, Comic Relief has raised over £250 million from eight Red Nose Days. |
