Dawn French’s new sitcom, Roger and Val Have Just Got In, starts in August.
The series explores the everyday of Roger and Val Stevenson (Alfred Molina and French), a middle-aged couple returning home from work, at which point we see each episode begin.
Although the idea for Roger and Val Have Just Got In was Dawn’s, she decided against writing the series herself, instead inviting twin sisters Emma and Beth Kilcoyne to do the honours. “I have a lot of respect for their work,” says Dawn. “They’re better writers than me and I felt this had a kind of drama tone with which I’m not familiar. We got together a few years ago, had lots of meetings and it grew organically from there.”
What follows is the half-hour where the couple recount their day to each other as well as an exploration of the chat and minutiae of a settled couple’s evening routine.
For her, it may involve her energetic day teaching at the local comprehensive. For him, his devoted work as a botanist at the Winter Gardens.
“Val is a food technology teacher,” Dawn says of her character. “She’s a ferocious advocate of it and gets furious when it’s sidelined in the school curriculum. She’s a bit of a control freak, a bit pedantic and wants to win every moment. Roger understands that about her and allows it - one of the things I love about it is there’s lots of dovetailing.”
The daily ritual is examined over six episodes starting Friday 6th August, BBC Two (see all).

Yeah! I hope it's available here in Canada sometime soon. Sounds interesting.

No you don't!
It's the most boring excuse of a show I have seen in a long time.
If anyone other than Dawn French had tried to sell it to the TV I cannot imagine it being produced.
I guess Alfred Molina has fallen out of favour with Hollywood otherwise I don't see why he would do this. Perhaps he needs the money!

I'm afraid I have to agree with Simon. Although the acting is ok, it's NOT FUNNY, it's not entertaining, and, worse, it's boring. The first episode I saw (Fish Fingers In The Fridge) was very dissapointing, perhaps because expectations were too high, but how can it not be with the funniest and most beautiful actress in the lead roll! Dawn did not look her brilliant self somehow. Oh! I already wish I had not written this...

TV critics seem to like this show and many fans do not.
Clearly a lot of fans would like Dawn French to do nothing more than slapstick and the "hilarious" West Country accent she has done for the last ten years.
God forbid she does anything different.

I love the show, its very moving and subtle in its context. It reminds me a lot of something Alan Bennett might write. More please.

I think the show has got better and better, as the episodes move along you come to understand much more about both characters. Funny and sad, Dawn is fabulous!

I absolutely love Roger and Val,it is so refreshing to watch this rich, very subtly funny piece. It is very intimate, very real, soothing to watch in a funny sort of way, far removed from all the fakery and poor acting of other programmes. Both are incredibly funny, I find myself laughing outloud. Dawn is amazing, and has evolved, and I am glad that her co star has left bloody holywood. He always used to do amazing stuff, he stood out, he's back and he is brilliant. Don't want it to end give me lots more....

I've just finished watching the last three episode in the series - sky+'d it, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and their background story, I hope more has been commissioned.

You can see it in the U.S. if you have a region-free or region-hackable DVD player (search online for these)--Amazon sells them.
I just got the DVD of this (in the U.S.) and have seen three episodes. I wouldn't really call it a "sitcom"--it seems to me to be most definitely more like live theater, especially as we see them in real time for the 30 minutes or whatever it is. And there's no laugh track. I really enjoy these characters. Can't wait to see where it goes next.

I so enjoy dramas/comedy droll comedy, that is human, doesn't have to have an elaborate set, just conversation, its not everyones cuppa tea, but then again I hate "action films". So it suits me fine. Thank you.

Just have to post a follow-up comment that I've now seen the entire series, and it was brilliant. The writing is amazing, because they've managed to capture some of the mundane things that happen to people every day, along with the far less mundane. They're so endearing. It feels real, and the actors have really managed to make it, well, REAL. I forget that I'm watching Dawn French--she isn't the vicar, and she isn't the goofy Dawn we love from F&S (though some her wonderful facial and vocal expressiveness is there)...she is Valerie, and she makes me believe her. Alfred Molina is fantastic as Roger...and if you're not sure in the beginning, if it seems to not be moving fast enough for you, stick with it--it's worth it. It's called exposition :-D
Just watched it a second time, this time, with my mother (who's a big F&S and Vicar fan). She wasn't too sure, at the start, but has ended up loving it. I'm not sure whether this is ending a series arc or the entire thing comes to an end now; it wraps up well, but I'd love to see them go on. Brilliant.
